Badaling Great Wall is located in Yanqing County, 80 kilometers northwest of downtown Beijing. Firstly built in 1505 with a total length of 7 kilometers, Badaling also holds the highest position of the Great Wall Wall in Beijing, with the highest altitude of 1015 meters. This section is also the earliest to be open to tourists among all the parts of the Great Wall, with its dangerous mountain slopes, splendid scenery, and distinctive four seasons. Guyaju Ancient Cliff Dwellings is a group dwelling carved out from a sandstone rock in the cliffs by unidentified ancient Chinese. There are 117 caves, and each was chiseled by doors, windows, brick beds, horse troughs, closets, cooking stoves, and kangs (a firebox that channels smoke under a bed). It looks like an ancient castle. Since the origin of the caves is still shrouded in mystery, Guyaju Caves is also called “the First Maze in China.”
00 Your guide will pick you up at the hotel lobby and drive to Badaling Great Wall (about 2 hours drive).
00-12:30 From the entrance of the Badaling Great Wall, the wall stretches south and north. The southern part of the Badaling Great Wall is about 1.3 km with seven watch towers and is shorter and less crowded than the north. The northern part stretching for 3 kilometers, with twelve water towers, is more prolonged and enjoys a better view. This part is also the most tourists' choice. The highlight of the Badaling Great Wall is the north No.11 watchtower, the highest point of the Great Wall. Cable cars and toboggan are also available in this section (about 2.5 hours).
30-13:30 Your guide will suggest a good local restaurant of your preference and pay on your own. After lunch, drive to Guyaju Ancient Cliff Dwellings (35km away, about a 1-hour drive).
30 -16:00 Explore the caves, and it’s really exciting to imagine how ancient Chinese people lived in these dwellings. Guyaju Ancient Cliff Dwellings is generally believed to have been built toward the end of the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) by the ethnic minority Xixi (西奚). However, some believe they are relics of the Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD). The uncertain origin and various interesting stories add to the mysterious charm of the Guyaju Caves. Also, this is the film “The White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom” shooting place (about 1.5 hours).
00 Arrived at the hotel and ended a wonderful day.
